This is from Altadena Town Council Member Michele Zack regarding the upcoming improvements to Fair Oaks!!
There isn't one document that summarizes the plan, but it is what the county calls a "full street reconstruction" from just south of Woodbury all the way up to Altadena Dr. It will involve a new road surface (they will redo the asphalt, taking it all off down to the sub-base and replacing with new material), fixing or replacing all broken curbs, gutters, and sidewalks, and adding 68 coastal live oak trees.
This is a positive development, and an opportunity for the community to pull together as the trees will need to be nurtured for the first years. The county is not strong on tree maintenance, but we are capable of taking on this responsibility as a gift to each other and our community. As stated in an earlier email, I welcome help in going around to talk to people about what will be happening on the street over the next several months. I have devoted many volunteer hours to this and have found almost every person really happy that their street environment will be improving. The "broken window" syndrome is well-documented and I completely reject the notion that fixing the street in any way implies a lack of caring or concern for human beings — in fact, just the opposite!
The county will be distributing a flyer within two weeks to affected businesses and property owners. The following is a forwarded email from the construction manager that outlines the stages of work.
(below are excerpts from Project Manager)
As for the trees, I appreciate your help contacting the residents and businesses and getting feed back as to what is wanted. But the sooner we know where a tree will be planted the better. Preparation for tree wells happen early on in the construction when work on the side walk is done. As for the progression of work, this project will be done in stages starting at Woodbury and progressing north to Altadena. In general, work starts from the outside of the street and moves to the center. For each stage, first phase of construction will be sidewalk, curb, gutter, driveways and outside lane. The second phase will be inside land and median. Traffic will be routed appropriately for each phase of construction. Currently, the stages are as follows: Stage 1: South and North of Woodbury Stage 2: North of Woodbury to south of Mariposa Stage 3: Intersection of Fair Oaks and Mariposa Stage 4: Mariposa to Altadena Currently, work is scheduled to begin June 25, 2007 on Fair Oaks south of Woodbury. This involves reducing two lanes of traffic to one lane on Fair Oaks in both directions. Left turn pockets are to remain. Brochures will be distributed two weeks prior to construction.
